Letter: Republican autocracy plan

Project 2025 is an assault against our democratic form of government. Do you want to live under an autocracy, with one person in charge of our country and a small group making rules that are aligned with conservative Christian values? If so, Project 2025 is for you. Republicans are pushing an undemocratic and elitist form of government.

Project 2025 is the blueprint for a Republican presidency. It promotes a strong president, often at the expense of Congress. It is blatantly supportive of Christian initiatives within government. It recommends firing thousands of career federal employees and replacing them with ideologically approved employees, trained in the goals of the administration. It promotes the president’s direct control of the Department of Justice and politicizes the FBI. It demolish many cabinet-level posts, including the Department of Education and Department of Homeland Security. It supports changing the relationship of president to press corps, perhaps excluding them from the White House campus.

Project 2025 addresses a myriad of other issues. Climate change action would be discarded in favor of environmentally harmful drilling and mining. Abortion would be nationally banned by presidentially administered regulations. Rights gained by LGBGTQ+ people, and especially people who are transgender, are targeted for obliteration. Public health responses to crisis such as the recent pandemic are ridiculed and will not see future implementation.

The two parties, Republican and Democrat, are not equivalent. The Democratic Party does not have a draconian platform such as this.

The Project 2025 document is available by an internet search for “Project 2025.” There are also many summaries available on the internet and in podcasts.
