Photos: Total solar eclipse captivates North America

Crowds gathered across the Lower 48 to witness the eclipse.

Spectators looked to the sky from Mexico to Canada on Monday, as a total solar eclipse made its way across North America on a path that included 15 U.S. states. It was the continent’s biggest eclipse audience ever, with a couple hundred million people living in or near its path.

Cloud cover spoiled the view in New York, but in other states the skies cleared just in time for people to take in the eclipse.
