Man dies in fire at Western Alaska police building

A man who was being detained at the Mountain Village Police Department died early Friday when the building caught fire, Alaska State Troopers said.

Few details about the fire were available by Friday afternoon.

Two men were being detained when the fire at the building broke out, and one was safely evacuated, troopers said. The other man was found dead, they said. Troopers said they were notified of the blaze around 6:30 a.m.

A village police officer was treated for minor injuries at the Bethel hospital, troopers said. The community of Mountain Village, which is located along the Yukon River, is roughly 110 miles northwest of Bethel.

It was not immediately clear what caused the fire or where it originated from. Troopers said the Alaska State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.

A spokesman for the troopers declined to answer additional questions Friday, including why the men were being detained, how many people were in the building when the fire started and whether foul play was suspected.

Troopers said they will publicly identify the man who died once he has been positively identified and his next of kin has been notified.

At least 24 people have died in fires so far this year in Alaska.
